Detail from 'Shades of Red'. Identification numbers from the Iraqi civilian casualty database were expressed as digital colour values and exposed onto 10"x8" photographic transparencies.

Combining original and appropriated imagery with a conceptual approach, my work reflects on the relationship between photography and loss. 'Embedded' explores the production and dissemination of war photography, inserting names into digital photographic files and rendering the corrupted JPEGs back into visual form. 'Shades of Red' are a series of installations for which identification numbers from the Iraqi civilian casualty database were expressed as digital colour values, exposed onto 10x8 inch photographic transparencies and displayed on hospital X-ray lightboxes. For 'Unknown Soldier', a veteran from Afghanistan was invited to take private confession, while the photograph’s exposure was determined by the duration of his account.

'Fifteen Shades of Red'. 15 identification numbers from the Iraqi civilian casualty database expressed as digital colour values and displayed on x-ray lightboxes discarded by British hospitals.
